During a Juneteenth celebration on June 18, 2022, children played in the fountain at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. The high turnout of African American voters was crucial to President Joe Biden's unexpected victory in Georgia during the 2020 presidential election. This marked the first time in nearly three decades that a Democratic presidential candidate won the state.

In the upcoming fall election, Biden has the opportunity to repeat his success against former President Donald Trump. Georgia remains a pivotal swing state in the race to the White House, despite differing circumstances this time around.

Georgia is classified as a swing state, meaning it plays a key role in determining the outcome of presidential elections. Both Democratic and Republican candidates have similar levels of support in such states. While the roster of swing states often remains consistent, changes can occur due to shifting demographics, voter turnout, and other factors. Georgia exemplifies this shift, having become a swing state following Biden's 2020 win and subsequent Democratic victories in lower-ticket races. U.S. News labeled Georgia a "toss-up" for the 2024 presidential election, but some Democrats worry about waning enthusiasm ahead of the Biden-Trump rematch.

### Georgia's Importance in the Presidential Race

Georgia has alternated between Democratic and Republican phases over the past century. From the late 1800s until 1960, it consistently voted for Democratic presidential candidates. Starting in 1964, however, Georgia predominantly supported Republican candidates, with Biden's 2020 victory being a notable exception.

With 16 electoral votes, Georgia ranks among the top ten states in electoral significance. Although it is somewhat less of a bellwether than other swing states, eight of the last twelve presidential candidates who won Georgia also won the presidency.

### Biden and Trump Campaign in Swing States

In a late March memo, Biden-Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez emphasized the competitiveness of Georgia and North Carolina, noting that early investment in these states is crucial. Biden underscored Georgia's importance with a post-State of the Union visit to Atlanta in early March. During his speech, he accused Trump and his allies of "taking us back in time, suppressing the vote, subverting elections." Biden returned to Atlanta on May 19 to deliver the commencement address at Morehouse College, a historically Black institution, addressing concerns from Black voters and young voters dissatisfied with his administration's response to Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza. The announcement of his speech led to peaceful protests and calls for its cancellation.

Meanwhile, Trump held a rally in Rome, Georgia, in March, where he criticized Biden for retracting his use of the term “illegal” in describing the alleged killer of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley during his address to Congress.
